A CA 72-4 test identifies cancer markers in the blood. The test can be used to monitor a range of cancers including the gastrointestinal tract and ovarian.

About

A CA 72-4 (cancer antigen 72-4) is a tumour marker that is released by cancerous cells into the bloodstream. It is released by cancers such as pancreatic, stomach, colon, cervix, gastrointestinal tract and ovarian. However, you may also have elevated CA 72-4 for other conditions such as rheumatic diseases or ovarian cysts.

Preparation

A CA 72-4 blood test involves a simple blood sample being taken which will be sent to the lab for testing. No preparation is needed.

Indications

It is mainly used to monitor the effectiveness of treatment of gastrointestinal cancer and ovarian cancer. If the level of CA 72-4 in your blood increases it indicates cancer has spread if the level of CA 74-4 falls it indicates the tumour has shrunk.

Interpretation

Elevated CA 72-4 levels in serum and plasma have been reported in various malignant diseases including carcinomas of pancreas, stomach, gall, colon, mamma, ovaries, cervix and endometrium. The highest diagnostic sensitivities are found for carcinomas of the gastrointestinal tract and ovaries. Although some benign diseases such as rheumatic diseases or ovary cysts may also result in elevated levels of CA 72-4, clinical studies demonstrated diagnostic specificities of more than 95% for gastrointestinal and ovarian malignancies.

There is a good correlation between CA 72-4 levels and tumour stage and size. CA 72-4 is the marker of choice for the therapeutic monitoring and follow-up care of gastrointestinal cancer patients.

Disclaimer

The laboratory test results are NOT to be interpreted as results of a "stand-alone" test. The test results have to be interpreted after correlating with suitable clinical findings and additional supplemental tests/information. Your healthcare providers will explain the meaning of your tests results, based on the overall clinical scenario. Certain medications that you may be currently taking may influence the outcome of the test. Hence, it is important to inform your healthcare provider of the complete list of medications (including any herbal supplements) you are currently taking. This will help the healthcare provider interpret your test results more accurately and avoid unnecessary chances of a misdiagnosis.
