A Fertility Check helps to determine the female fertility potential (how long you have left to have a baby). Usually, this naturally decreases with age, but sometimes it can decrease faster or slower than expected.

In fertility treatment planning, the ovarian reserve test is used to indicate what the response will be to the stimulation of the ovaries, as well as the potential for success. Ovarian reserve testing relates to the tests taken to understand a woman’s ovarian reserve. There are two key tests in ovarian reserve testing - antral follicle count, and AMH blood tests. Together, these two tests provide an accurate assessment of the female reproductive potential.

The antral follicle count is the number of antral follicles that are present at the beginning of the cycle and have the potential to grow and become competent follicles that we can see, measure, and count.

These can, with reasonable accuracy, be counted through a vaginal ultrasound examination. The sum of the antral follicles in the ovaries can indicate what the fertility potential is of the woman, and importantly, what the response will be to treatment involving stimulation of the ovaries, particularly for in-vitro fertilization (IVF).

You should empty your bladder just before the Fertility Check scan, this prevents discomfort and ensures your uterus and ovaries are in the most optimal position to perform the scan.

You’ll need to remove the clothes from the waist downwards, including your underwear. Our sonographer will give you privacy whilst you prepare. A large hygienic tissue sheet will be provided to cover your modesty.

If you’re undergoing fertility treatment you may need to take medication to stimulate ovulation. Your fertility doctor can advise you about this.

A Fertility Check scan is performed using a transvaginal ultrasound probe. The specially designed probe will be inserted into your vagina so that the ultrasound waves can be focused on your ovaries.

Your fertility specialist might also recommend a blood test to check your hormone levels alongside the ultrasound scan as they can affect ovulation and your ability to conceive. We are also able to perform blood tests for you. Please let our team know which blood tests you require.

Your GP, Consultant or IVF clinic fertility specialist may recommend a Fertility Check scan to assist with conceiving a baby. They may request for you to book this ultrasound scan to:

  • Determine when you are ovulating so you can time your sexual activity to maximise the chances of conceiving naturally
  • Ensure that your eggs are maturing and being released for fertilisation to exclude gynaecological conditions which can affect fertility
  • Determine the baseline antral follicle count (AFC) to help plan IVF treatment
  • Ensure that your medication is working if you’re having fertility treatment to stimulate ovulation
  • Determine when your eggs are ready to be collected for IVF treatment
  • Ensure that your eggs are maturing and being released for fertilisation to exclude gynaecological conditions which can affect fertility

The sonographer will be able to tell you the results of the scan at the time of visit. You will also get a detailed ultrasound report to file with your health records.

The scan results are NOT to be interpreted as results of a "stand-alone" test. The test results have to be interpreted after correlating with suitable clinical findings and additional supplemental tests/information. Your healthcare providers will explain the meaning of your tests results, based on the overall clinical scenario. Certain medications that you may be currently taking may influence the outcome of the test. Hence, it is important to inform your healthcare provider of the complete list of medications (including any herbal supplements) you are currently taking. This will help the healthcare provider interpret your test results more accurately and avoid unnecessary chances of a misdiagnosis.
