ECG

Book

The cardiologists at VisitHealth are expert at diagnosing and treating heart problems and use the most advanced technology and equipment to ensure the most precise and reliable diagnosis. In this test, your doctor might use a resting ECG (when you’re lying down in a comfortable position) or an exercise ECG (which is carried out while you are using an exercise bike), depending on your symptoms. Your doctor will review the readings from the ECG machine with you and will work quickly to advise you on a plan of care for immediate progress. If travel is inconvenient or difficult, VisitHealth's cardiology mobile service can perform this test at your home or place of care at any time of the day or night.

What is an ECG?

An electrocardiogram (ECG) is a simple, painless test to check your heart’s electrical activity and rhythm. Sensors called electrodes are attached to the skin to detect the electrical signals produced by the heart each time it beats. There is no electricity sent through the body during the test. (NB. This isn’t an echocardiogram (ECHO), which is a scan of the heart.)

What parts of the body does an ECG look at?

The heart.

What conditions can an ECG be used to diagnose or monitor?

  • Heart problems such as chest pain, palpitations, dizziness and shortness of breath
  • Atrial fibrillation
  • Arrhythmia
  • Coronary heart disease
  • Heart attacks
  • Cardiomyopathy
