Andropause or male menopause describes a drop in testosterone levels that many men experience as they get older. Testosterone levels gradually decline with age to the tune of about 1 per cent a year after the age of 30 on average. Male menopause can cause physical, sexual and psychological problems.

This profile measures the amount of the five main male hormones in the blood including Free Androgen Index – is a ratio used to determine abnormal androgen status.

An Andropause profile provides information on the number of essential hormones present in a male patient, which are crucial in supporting the health and wellness of an individual. The profile can be used as an initial screening of a patient’s hormone status, and also as a method of determining the effectiveness of hormone replacement therapies currently being applied to a male patient.

None; however, testosterone is best measured in the morning because, in men, testosterone levels demonstrate diurnal variation with higher levels in the morning.

Men who are experiencing any variety of symptoms commonly associated with lower testosterone and other hormone levels, such as depression, bone loss, erectile dysfunction, memory loss, weight gain, or an enlarged prostate, can benefit from having an Andropause profile performed. Also, those who are already undergoing hormone replacement therapy for any of these conditions, or others which are related, can use the test to determine the effectiveness of these treatments.

Men who are not very active lose muscle mass and flexibility as they age. However, you can keep your muscles strong and improve your health by keeping active and exercising regularly. Testosterone levels decrease normally with age. This may cause men to have erectile problems or to lose interest in sex.

You should strongly consider testing if you are a man struggling with male infertility (low sperm count), low sex drive, erectile dysfunction, moodiness, loss of muscle tone or increased body fat. Even if you are not exhibiting symptoms, the prostate cancer check is a valuable investment in your future health and wellness.

Results of the tests that are part of the Andropause profile are typically evaluated together to look for patterns of results. A single abnormal test result may mean something different than if several test results are abnormal. For example, a low SHBG level means that more of the total testosterone is bioavailable and not bound to SHBG.

A healthcare practitioner who is monitoring a man’s hormones will be looking at trends in the levels, rising or lowering over time in conjunction with the age, nutrition and supplements taking rather than evaluating single values. Test results are not diagnostic of a specific condition but give the healthcare practitioner information about the potential cause of a person’s symptoms or status.

See the pages on the individual tests for more detailed information about each one.

The laboratory test results are NOT to be interpreted as results of a "stand-alone" test. The test results have to be interpreted after correlating with suitable clinical findings and additional supplemental tests/information. Your healthcare providers will explain the meaning of your tests results, based on the overall clinical scenario. Certain medications that you may be currently taking may influence the outcome of the test. Hence, it is important to inform your healthcare provider of the complete list of medications (including any herbal supplements) you are currently taking. This will help the healthcare provider interpret your test results more accurately and avoid unnecessary chances of a misdiagnosis.
